I Peer Into Chicken Noodle’s Mirror
project. In December 2002 I discussed the issue of race with Phil’s graduate class on "indigeneities" at
the University of Michigan, and this discussion gave me a sense of hope and inspiration as I pursued
the thinking that manifested in my subsequent life as a Closet Chicken. Many Chickens - agreeing and
disagreeing with me - have provided useful critical input and/or encouragement over the years in
response to the ideas in these pages, especially Larry Zimmerman, Lee Clauss, Desireé Martínez, Joe
Watkins, Dorothy Lippert, Deborah Nichols, Ed Jolie, Claire Smith, Kerry Thompson, Sonya Atalay,
and Mike Wilcox. My gratitude and goodwill goes to the entire coop. Complaints about this project
should go to Peter Michelson as the main culprit who egged me on at a crucial moment in my life.
